The narrative of my Physics study

When I was a teenager, thinking about my future career I was convinced that I would either be a forester or a physicist! This interest caused that I pay more attention to physical science, and I continued my high school studies in mathematics and physics. When I was going to conclude my studies in high school, a revolution in Iran took place in 1978 that changed many things and norms; I however was very keen in continuing my studies in physics. Following the revolution in Iran the universities were closed for one year and then I was accepted with high score in the national entry exam to study physics in Tehran University in 1979. The Physics Group of Tehran University at that time was the number one among the Iranian universities that were offering physics course. It was only one year since the reopening of the universities in Iran that the alleged “Cultural Revolution” was officially announced by the government! It was indeed a messy situation in the country. The universities were closed by the bayonet and violently. The era of horror was getting to predominate step by step throughout the land. In that period the Embassy of the United States of America in Tehran was occupied, the war between Iraq and Iran began, and mass state assassination of the dissidents continued. I was witnessing these unfortunate and unfavorable events and was suffering and being hurt like many other university students in Iran. After about two years the universities in Iran began to reopen gradually and one by one but under a new unfavorable and restricting discipline imposed by the government while many of the knowledgeable and experienced professors and tutors had dismissed or emigrated along with other specialists and technocrats leaving the country and the nation at the hands of incompetent and non-qualified authorities who were taking their place gradually and increasingly day after day. However, when my faculty in Tehran University reopened in 1981, surprisingly I was not allowed to continue my interrupted study in the university actually for no any clear reason. It was really vain. In practice there was no accusation before me since I had never committed any crime. My only fault was that I had been beaten by the rascals and villains in course of the aggression of the government-supported gangs and pressure bands to the University of Tehran on 4 May 1980. The self-styled Islamic government forbade me to continue my academic studies under the alleged plan so called “Cultural Revolution” according to the verdicts which images and their translation to English language are seen below and I received on 2 September 1984 and 16 June 1986 respectively. It was really a nightmare; however, it was there cruelly and affected many university students including me.

It was not good for me. I left Tehran and returned my parental home in Maragheh, North Eastern Azerbaijan for more five years. Those years were one of the darkest periods in my life. Shortsightedness was predominating and there was no clear horizon before. I tried to overcome this unfortunate situation by setting a program for work, study and advancement. By self-training I committed to learn French language and advanced promisingly. I began to translate scientific French books particularly in mathematics and then physics. After five years in light of some state reformist decisions I was only allowed conditionally to complete my interrupted studies for a bachelor degree in physics! At that time I was passing my military service in Tehran which was started early in 1987. The war between Iran and Iraq was continuing severely and with high and great causalities however I exempted of being sent to the battle fields in west and south west of the country because my younger brother was passing his military service in the Iran-Iraq battle fields. I passed several months of my military service in a garrison next to a camp of the Iraqi prisoners of war in south of Tehran. I was later sent to another garrison in north east of Tehran. When I had only 25 days to finish my military service I stopped it since a few months earlier I had been authorized to continue my interrupted study of physics in Tehran University. In that critical situation it was the only way. But as soon as I restarted studying at the University of Tehran, the universities forcedly closed once again this time because of the risks of the attacks of Iraqi forces to the capital and other strategic cities throughout the country. Half a year later the universities reopened and I succeeded to continue my study. After concluding my study for a bachelor degree in physics in 1991 I attempted to participate in the national entry exam for master degree in physics, however, I later learnt implicitly that my struggle was to no avail (as the image of the relevant letter and its translation to English language shows it below) since I had been authorized to only conclude my studies for a bachelor degree and there was a prohibition in following my studies for a masters and doctoral degree in Iran.

It was very cruelly as well as unjust. Remembering that bitter situation is ever annoying, horrible and unfavorable for me. There was no possibility for me to continue my studies in higher academic level in Iran. Some financial shortage as well as familial hurdles was not allowing me to leave home in that situation and particularly when it was under the sovereignty of the greatest enemies of its nation, dignity, respect, pride, culture and civilization. It was not fair to leave it alone in such the unfortunate situation, I believed. I therefore selected to stay and stand-up despite of tortures, offends, punishments, deprivations, limitations and discrimination! I remained to try to change the things and trends. That was the hardest job. I wonder whether the history will judge on this or not, however I have felt relieved. I tried to find some applicable way to continue my academic studies for further knowledge and accomplishment. That was why I selected Knightsbridge University’s distance learning program after lots of investigation and study on the subject. The England-based Knightsbridge University changed its office from Devon in southwest UK to Spentrup in Denmark in 2002. In the middle of the last decade of the second millennium the political as well as social climate in Iran began to get moderate relatively. It was somewhat promising. The Iranian Remote Sensing Center (IRSC) affiliated to the Ministry of Post, Telegraph and Telephone employed me in September 1992. IRSC became the basis for the newborn Iran’s space agency (ISA) that established in February 2004 under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and covered all tasks and functions of IRSC as well as few other space related bodies. I gained some good achievements; however, I have never authorized to continue my high level studies in Iran. I therefore developed my work and study by myself. I have ever believed myself to be the obligor to my nation and the humanity. Even as the first Iranian who has had a position in the Bureau of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN-COPUOS) since its establishment in 1958, I always followed the above-mentioned idea. UN-COPUOS is the greatest and highest international body throughout the world involved in the application of space for peaceful purposes.

Unfortunately, like the early couple of decades after the revolution of 1978, again personal and bigotry ideological loyalty has been valued over competence since 2005. The nightmare began to emerge again influencing even selection of the individuals for occupying the official (and even unofficial) positions and capacities in all levels throughout the country. The Empire of Dissimulation was spreading its octopus-like inauspicious arms all around the Myth-land. Since then this has threatened the security of the citizens mentally, socially, financially and physically, opening the doors for predomination of corruption in the society and enhancing it. This means that for being honest, clean and safe in this community one should bear a very dreadful pressure, torture and suffer very horribly without any shelter and support. It is the situation for the individual that intends to live free, honest and clean; it is a great regret indeed. I have been facing lots of discriminations, limitations and losses caused by the situation mentioned above. Being and living freeborn and noble is the treasure that I have paid enormously for it!

Working with the Knightsbridge University was not easy and comfortable job for me; at least it was too much harder than leaving the country and settle abroad to study and live. I reached the accomplishment of being a Master of Science in April 1999. But it was only the beginning for me. I soon after prepared myself to start the important and greater job of studying for a PhD degree in physics in June 2000.

For the PhD thesis I selected the dissertation entitled “Radar interferometry; a precise method for measuring the surface displacements and generating 3-D models of land features” at first under the tutorship of Dr. Christopher Brindle that later because of his involvements and limitations I shifted to work under the tutorship of Professor Jerry D. Brown a NASA scientist who was at the same time the president of the non-governmental Foundation of Discovery. It took to me about eight years to research and study on the subject despite of the problems and obstacles before me. In conjunction with a colleague from my organization we applied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry technique for tiny change detection from space while we also used SAR temporal composites to support our studies. In November 2008 I finalized preparing my thesis according to the guidance, supervision, and comments of my tutor Professor Jerry Brown and based on the agreed outline proposed by me and in line with the regulations of the Knightsbridge University for preparing a standard academic dissertation. It was reflecting the contribution that I made to the subject of my dissertation in course of the years of work and experiencing it since 1994. I carried out the job of working on my thesis subject in the status of hope and fear for long years. In November 2009 my PhD thesis was approved by the Knightsbridge University. In light of the accomplishment to which I attained in course of the years of scientific work in 2010 I started studying an un-explored subject of Liqui-InSAR that is the application of SAR Interferometric technique for aquatic bodies.

    

While I reiterate my deep appreciation to Knightsbridge University and particularly Mr. Henrik Fyrst Kristensen for supporting me for several years and providing me with the opportunity to carry out my thesis for a PhD degree in Physics, it is worth to point out that I conducted that solemn, vigorous and genuine job for about eight years in a realm that- despite its undeniable glorious past- privileging the authority to study in the academic and post graduate levels has been a reward by the government to the people who disclaim the esprit of truth-seeking and freethinking of genuine science. I faced a great ban in accessing the scientific sources either by the domestic academic authorities and the global relations. None of the people that I referred to them for assisting me in providing the book references suggested by my tutor Professor Brown, consented positively indeed. Even in the latter years of preparing my thesis communication with Professor Brown was too limited and difficult.

  

I conducted this valuable job in that situation of the Myth-land under the governance of the Empire of Dissimulation where comfort, convenience and luxuriating of the social endowments is unfortunately being offered to the people who show their servility, denying the truth and justice, and disdaining the integrity. However, after all, I do believe that the conclusion is the triumph for accomplishment, gentility and percipience. I always wished to be deserved for it. I feel myself at the beginning of the long, astonishing and wonderful way of accomplishment and sagacity.

It might be a regret to talk about such miseries and injustice before me and perhaps it would seem unbelievable and unimaginable for the subsequent generations who has never experienced such the unfortunate situation as mine but they are true and have happened for me. I have been deprived of the basic rights of a human that he/she should benefit of it in a righteous and healthy community. I was unable to leave my country for higher education however I am pride that I benefited the opportunity to study for a PhD degree in physics despite of the difficulties, strict limitations and discriminations before me (see the testimonial of the continued developments in this connection in ‘Features’ and ‘Publications’ pages). I trust that my achieved accomplishment will open many ways than ever before for my scientific and social progress and advancement.
