The products of the research study and work made on Envisat ASAR IMS SLCI data of Bam Earthquake, Iran, 26 December 2003 in course of the years 2004-2009, Iranian Space Agency, Mahdasht Satellite Receiving Station, Microwave Remote Sensing Research Group, Tehran & Karaj, Iran

 

 

 

Introduction

Following the advent of the earthquake of 26 December 2003 that devastated the city of Bam in southern Iran leaving huge casualty and destructing the Citadel Bam, the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) affiliated to the European Space Agency (ESA) provided me with the data of the area collected by the ESA’s Envisat satellite for investigation and research mean. Hereby my acknowledgments are extended to ESA-ESRIN’s for kind and generous assistance and support. The list of the data that was made available comprised of the single look complex images (SLCI) of the C-band Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) image mode system as below:

For each above item there is seen three numbers that refer to orbit number, track and acquisition data respectively. Acquisition date is appeared in yyyymmdd format. Data polarity is VV while its format is mph-sph. The first three of the above listed data are collected before the earthquake of 26 December 2003 and the next three are taken after the quake.

Data examining and analysis began by the research group of the microwave remote sensing leaded by me in the newly established Iranian Space Agency as soon as the data was accessed by the research group early 2004. Using the available software and methods including SAR interferometric and non-interferometric data processing procedures the useful information extracted from the data. The scientific domain software of the Basic Envisat SAR Toolbox (BEST) was the primary applied tool that was followed by the application of other specialized and professional software. The results of the work and investigation on the data has been published and promoted more or less by the papers, articles and presentations.       

As an example the InSAR Deformation Inspection and Observation Tool (I.D.I.O.T) software developed by the Computer Vision and Remote Sensing Group of the Berlin University of Technology of Germany used by our group for the available data of Bam Earthquake. We tested the software for the 30 possible combinations of Interferometric SAR data pairs that are listed below.

Each combination is identified by the acquisition dates for master and slave images of the pair respectively while the virtual baseline in meters comes after abbreviation word of BSLN (that stands for baseline) for the combination. The items marked by green color are those pairs among the 30 possible combinations for which the coherence and other parameters allow producing interferometric products. The relevant products for the successful image pair combinations marked by green are as follows. The relative parameters for each pair appear firstly that is followed by the image of 12 related products respectively. Clicking on each image will provide a larger view.

Investigator’s biography 

Parviz Tarikhi, born in 1960, is a researcher specializing in space science and technology based in Iran majoring in radar remote sensing since 1994. He received the B.Sc. degree in Physics from Tehran University in 1991 and M.Sc. degree in Physics from the Knightsbridge University, UK in April 1999. Since November 2009 he holds a PhD in physics from the Knightsbridge University, Denmark focusing on microwave remote sensing. Holography for 3-D modeling of the land features and SAR interferometry for estimating the surface displacements and change detection are included amongst his research interests. He heads the Microwave Remote Sensing Research Core at the Mahdasht Satellite Receiving Station.

He has been involved with the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN-COPUOS) since 2000, including as Second Vice-Chair and Rapporteur in 2004-06 of the committee bureau. Since 2001 he has co-chaired Action Team number 1 of UNISPACE-III with the mission ‘to develop a comprehensive worldwide environmental monitoring strategy’. From 2004-07 he led the Office for Specialized International Cooperation of the Iranian Space Agency. He is also a freelance journalist and technical writer. He has made in the mean time years of research and study on the developments and status of space science and technology with a particular focus on Iran.
