About me

Born on Sunday, 21^st August 1960 in Maragheh, north-western Iran (famous for Maragheh Observatory and its founder Khajeh Nasir al-Din al Tusi), I am a space science and technology senior expert affiliated with the Iranian Space Agency (ISA) since February 2004 in continuation of the activity in the former Iranian Remote Sensing Center (IRSC) based in Tehran, Iran from 1991 to 2004. Holding a PhD degree in physics I am also a researcher, freelance journalist and technical writer in my career.

From June 2004 to June 2006 I worked as the United Nations Committee of Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) Bureau Member in the capacity of the Second Vice-Chairman and Rapporteur. I am the first Iranian that has joined COPUOS Bureau since its establishment in 1958. Although this responsibility concluded in June 2006 however, my membership in Group-15, comprised of current, last and future COPUOS Bureau members of the date lasted by 11^th June 2008 when the 51^st COPUOS meeting opened. Since 2001 I have chaired the Action Team number 1 of the Recommendations of UNISPACE-III (United Nations Third International Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space) with the mission ‘to develop a comprehensive worldwide environmental monitoring strategy’. In addition to the international activities related to COPUOS in the global level, I have been also involved with the activities of UN-ESCAP Regional Space Applications Program (RESAP) and AP-MCSTA Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) initiatives in the regional level. From 2002 to 2007 I led the Office for Specialized International Cooperation of the former IRSC and then ISA. In spite of the face that I worked actively for years in the international and official capacities and positions, since 2007 I have been keenly restrained to work in key positions in the space agency; I have been mainly involved with the research and development work on microwave remote sensing and studying the developments and status of space science and technology with a particular focus on Iran at the remote site of Mahdasht Receiving Station which name has changed to Alborz Space Center since May 2011.

Well experienced in the analysis of satellite data collected from earth resources I am specializing in radar remote sensing since 1994. The noteworthy in this connection is my expertise to work with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. In 1999, in care of the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN) I implemented an international study project on SAR Interferometry the report of which was submitted to ESRIN and a relevant paper was presented by me in the 29^th International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE-29) that was held in March 2002 at Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Due to feature work on promoting remote sensing technology applications in Iran I was awarded the ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) International Eduard Dolezal Prize for the year 2000 in the 19^th ISPRS Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In May 2010 I worked as the lecturer of the international training course on the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery; processing, interpretation and applications. The course was held from 3^rd to 14^th May in Tunis, Tunisia. I imparted training on SAR Interferometry, DInSAR and PSInSAR in the course. The program was organized and conducted jointly by the Centre Regional de Télédétection des Etats d’Adrique du Nord- CRTEAN (Regional Center for Remote Sensing of North African Countries) and ISNET (Inter-Islamic Network on Space Sciences and Technology).

Active in journalism and scientific writing since 1990, primarily in my native language Persian (Parsi) I worked with the local base-science magazine Ganjineh, Fatemi Publishers, Tehran and then organized and headed the Bulletin of the IRSC. I later developed and extended this activity to English language at the international level. It is notable that my article entitled “Destruction in the Delta” published in the February/March 2008 issue (No. 33) of the Australian Position Magazine was recognized as the five top articles in the 2008 Aerospace Journalist of the Year Award in the category of ITT Best Space Submission organized by World Leadership Forum.
